Reminiscing when Sundays were a family time in Canada, due to the Lord's Day Act, in which no businesses were allowed to open that day except essential services. The irony is that some restrictions actually give more freedom.

Sunday Drives

I remember well Sunday rides in the car
We’d all pile in and Dad would drive us so far
Till the city roads had given way to country lanes
And we would count all the cows and the cars on passing trains

And I remember then we would stop for a rest
At a roadside café where the shakes were the best
Then we’d carry on to a picnic by the sea
Because Mom had packed good food for us to eat

Sunday drives were a family time
We put aside all other things just to climb
Inside that big old car
And though we didn’t go so far
We went together

With every passing mile we’d sing a happy song
Tell a joke, play a game – the ride was never too long
Then we’d find someplace new, some place to explore
Climb a tree, swim the sea. We were never bored

Now the only drives I take are down memory lane
Life can get so busy. Life can get so insane
There’s so much competing for our time
