Remembering an ordinary day at my home when I was young.

Gold

We've been waiting all afternoon
for Daddy to come home
He's coming real soon
We know
He always comes at this time

We've done our homework
and we've played some games
Mamma made some supper
and she baked a cake
And I can hardly wait
because it looks real fine

Then there’s the sound of footsteps on the stair outside
Then the click of the door and it opens wide
And there stands Daddy with a smile from ear to ear
Then we all run forward from the living room rug
Mamma gets there first and gives him a hug
And with a kiss she says “welcome home dear”

We all gather for the meal Mamma's prepared
Before we start eating we say a prayer
Of thanks,
for God is good
Then we all start talking about the day we’ve had
Eating and talking till finally Dad
Says, “Don’t talk
with your mouth full of food”

Finally comes the moment I’ve been waiting for
Mamma brings the cake across the kitchen floor
She gives me a big piece with ice cream
We all dig in with grins a mile wide
And then sit back all satisfied
Nothing beats cake and ice cream

Then the favourite part of the evening arrives
Daddy reads a story and it comes alive
Though I’ve heard it before,
it never grows old

Us kids are tired. It’s the end of the day
Mamma tucks us in bed and helps us pray
I say “Thank you Lord.
This day was gold.”
