My Son, I'm Your Daughter

lyrics

An angel came calling early one morning
Early one morning
more than thirty years ago
Out of the darkness he spoke to me clearly.
Spoke to me clearly,
"Rejoice! The Lord has found favor with you"

Profound is the mystery for which I've been chosen
The fulfillment of all that the ancients had spoken
Mortal creature gives birth to the Everlasting One
How is it I should be the mother of God's holy Son

An army of angels sung of his birth
Sung of his birth
to a band of rough shepherds on a hill nearby
Scholars arrived from far to the east,
far to the east
with gifts for a king, a priest - yet one who would die

Profound is the mystery for which I've been chosen
The fulfillment of all that the ancients had spoken
While the shepherds were welcomed in by his father
I whispered into his ear, "My son, I'm your mother"

Angels attended my son in the wilderness
on the eve of his journey down the road of his purpose
I watched with a heart that was thrilled and confused
as he shattered foundations and raised up the poor and abused
The boundaries of family he extended to all
who would listen and follow, heeding his call

Profound is the mystery for which I've been chosen
The fulfillment of all that the ancients had spoken
As he taught us how to to pray to the Father
I thought to myself, "My son, I'm your sister"

He was strengthened by an angel on the eve of his death
The eve of his death
Then willingly he yielded to the scorn of the cross
My heart tore in anguish as I heard his last breath
I heard his last breath
certain that the vision I'd held to all these years was lost

But angels declared death is now impotent
Death is now impotent
as we discovered you'd risen from the grave
And angels assured us you'd return in your glory
Return in your glory
And finally we understood our souls were saved

Profound is the mystery for which I've been chosen
The fulfillment of all that the ancients had spoken
As we watched him rise up - a King from the slaughter
I realized right then, "My son, I'm your daughter.
Your daughter. Your daughter"

I've been writing songs since my teens. I like to tell stories in my songs. In each story is a glimmer of the grace held out to us in all aspects of life. I hope as you listen, you will hear and see it. ... more
